Following the publication of the Chief Medical Officer’s first annual report in January 2016 “Realistic Medicine” this seminar provided a timely opportunity for delegates to discuss the future of the NHS in Scotland and the subject of realistic medicine.
Delegates discussed how the health service can reduce the negative impact on patients of over-investigation and over-treatment through more research into the impact of extra medicine on patients, particularly those suffering from multiple complex conditions, and increased attempts to support individual and population lifestyle changes.
Further sessions looked at potential steps for ensuring that the design of treatment and services was person centred. Delegates also considered the future direction of medical research in Scotland and what lessons could be learnt from best practice abroad.
The seminar brought together key stakeholders including members of the Scottish Government and Parliament, health consumer organisations, trade unions, local government, representatives of healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, academia, interested and affected charities and user groups, and representatives of the trade and national press.
