With the Scottish Government set to consult on a new obesity and diet strategy in 2017, this seminar provided a timely opportunity for delegates to discuss future priorities for tackling obesity in Scotland.
It followed publication of Food Standards Scotland’s 5 year strategy Shaping Scotland’s Food Future - which includes steps that will be taken to help tackle obesity such as developing dietary guidelines in Scotland and a potential tax on high sugar, salt and fat foods - and the revised Scottish Dietary Goals - which match SACN’s advice that intake of free sugars should be halved.
Discussion focused on the potential of further regulation and taxation, including a sugar tax; the role of advertising; latest thinking on consumer choices and behaviour; and the progress and future challenges of the reformulation of products to reduce sugar content.
Further sessions assessed preventative measures adopted by local authorities and schools to tackle childhood obesity and the dissemination of best practice within the industry.
