This conference was a timely opportunity to discuss the Scottish Government’s draft diet and obesity strategy: “A healthier future - action and ambitions on diet, activity and healthy weight.”
It brought policymakers together with key stakeholders groups including food and drink manufacturers, health practitioners and consumers to consider the potential implications of the strategy’s proposals.
Areas for discussion amongst attendees included action to limit price promotion on food and drink products that are high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS); extending restrictions on the advertising of HFSS products to all programmes before the 9pm watershed; practical support for food manufacturers to reformulate their products;
Delegates also discussed initiatives to encourage greater levels of physical activity as well as links between obesity and other health conditions such as cancer.
