The seminar followed the publication of the Local Government and Communities Committee report ‘City Regions: Deal or No Deal?’, which raised questions around the focus and structure of City Region Deals in Scotland, particularly in terms of ensuring that economic growth delivers benefits across the whole of society.
Delegates discussed progress in delivering key infrastructure projects agreed as part of the City Region Deal across areas such as transport, housing and commercial facilities - and their potential contribution to economic growth such as the projects to improve integration of the city region’s transport system, as well as others delivering on the inclusive growth agenda - such as investment in a new financial services hub in Glasgow.
Further sessions focused on policy priorities for ensuring that growth is inclusive and deliver benefits across the social and regional spectrum. In particular attendees discussed the role of employability and skills programmes being delivered as part of the City Region Deal, how colleges and universities within the city can be best utilised to tackle the skills gap, as well as opportunities for building local economic networks.
